Research Interests

Overview:

Designing and evaluating the use of innovative technologies to support everyday life and social interaction and to ‘make a difference’. I am particularly interested in the potential for new and emerging technologies such as mobile, wireless and sensor-based technologies to support social and community engagement, motivation and behaviour change, healthcare, and older people.

In more detail:

I have eclectic research interests and like working at the intersection of disciplines and seeing new connections and possibilities.  I use a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods as appropriate to the research question, though I have a preference for more qualitative and participatory design methods and also for engaging with the complexity and richness of authentic real world rather than lab settings. I use qualitative methods especially to understand the needs and possibilities for technology, to engage in participatory design of solutions, and to study the impact of applications in real use. I prefer to take the perspective of the people ‘on the ground’ and thinking about how we deliver value to them, complementing other more top-down approaches.

This overall approach has been applied to diverse topic areas and user groups including: social networking, workplace collaboration, expertise sharing, reflective practice, motivation and behaviour change, affective computing, healthcare/telecare, smart homes, mobile outdoor learning and play, social networking for older people, games, creativity and disabled people, sustainability, self presentation.

Currently I am fascinated by the emerging insights from neuroscience for understanding individual thinking and behaviour change as well as understanding social interactions, and how we might be able to use pervasive technologies to support these.
