I've created www.audiokarte.at about a year ago as some kind of prototype. From a technical point of view it's just a mashup of exiting platforms. The map-viewer is currently centered on Vienna, where I'm trying to achieve a certain density of sounds. My main goal was to enhance tactile maps for visual impaired users. However, I think the possible use cases of this kind of audio map are hardly explored.
Last week I met with John Grzinich who just did several field recordings in Vienna and its vicinity. I have also been pointed to the works of Florian Gruber. I think there might be some shared interests...
Hi Armin, thank you for your invitation. For my different sound projects I work a lot with soundscape recordings. I like the simple and comprehensible concept of audiokarte.at. I would be interested if it´s possible to create paths in google maps for sonic walks and some kind of stack system for the recordings.
For my next project in Warsaw I want to monitor selected places divided by their urban function. I would be great to have an additional webtool for this project.
Hi Florian! Paths for soundwalks are currently not planned, but I will keep them in mind. A stack system makes definitely sense. Keep me updated on the Warsaw project!
All of these projects differ in terms of recording quality and quantity, content, activity, openness, licensing, technology etc. What I'm missing in most projects is a documented API (This is why I first choose to rely on the audioboo platform. However, audioboo is a startup and this of course has its own downsides…)
Also Soundcloud started to experiment with soundmaps. At the moment positioning is only possible by using their mobile app (no web interface). All the data gets stored as tags together with a Foursquare venue location id.
During the last week I was recording in the city of Warsaw with a Zoom H2n (4 channel surround mode). For the upload to audioboo I converted the sound into stereo. audioboo.fm/transmedia
I´m thinking of a solution for converting the four channel signal into a stereo signal. The allocation of the sound should be controlled through the point of compass. Google Maps doesn´t offer the possibility to change the point of compass (strictly north) - I will try to create a offline "dummy" version in MAX.
